Society6

Today I just signed up with Society6.com.   A site where you can publish your artwork to be printed on various media for sale to the public.

The verification process requires you to link a paypal to them and pay a $1 fee.  Afterwhich you can post stuff for sale - I'll post more when I manage to do that.

The Double-NAT problem

I just realized that a MyRepublic Fiber plan account will create a Double-NAT problem.

What this means is the ONT device that connects to the fiber point, will already do NAT (Network Address Translation) once. That port is then connected to a wireless router (in my case an ASUS router).

So as usual, the ASUS router gives out NATed address in the range of 192.168.1.xxx

But when I observed what WAN address the ASUS router is getting, I get 172.22.23.230.

But I know my public IP address should be something like 103.252.xxx.xxx

What that means to me, is I cannot use the DDNS feature on the router. And there is no way I can get around it, unless i subscribe for a static IP address (which cost some money).

Anyone figured out how to prevent the 2nd NAT? Perhaps setting up the Asus router as a bridge or access point only? not as a router?

--- Update 7 Mar 2016 ---

There is no solution to the Double NAT problem, especially since I have no access to the Fiber box, cannot configure port forwarding nor DMZ.  So it would appear the best solution is pay My Republic $50 to get a static IPv4 address.

Kodi (former XBMC)

I saw youtube on Kodi setup that I thought is good.
Eventually I must compile a set of instructions just for Singapore Movies and TV enthusiasts.

This is a good guide.

Home Automation

Home Automation Resource

I figured that this site, "Everything Binary" may be a little too broad. As such I am testing to spring board the "Home Automation Resource Site" (which is hosted at x10hosting). This will free up EverythingBinary from covering Smart Homes type articles and maybe focus more on software arena.

Another change is that I'm trying out Wordpress on x10 Hosting, coz for whatever reason, Google had removed the Blogger App from the iTunes store.  So now it becomes hard to publish stuff on the move on Blogger for me.

Latest update : Today (7 Mar 2016), I found my Home Automation Wordpress site suddenly disappeared.. So much for free hosting at x10hosting.com All my posts are gone, and the visitors were just picking up. Bummer

Apple's direction

Apple did very well with their larger iphones but how will they fare going forward as their product lines get more fragmented and cause confusion to the masses.

Take the comparison for the Macbook range, as a consumer,  I will be confuse whether to get a MacBook for $1299 or a Macbook Air at $999 (cheaper and better CPU)

Samsung EVO 850 SSD

My Samsung EVO 840 120GB is running low on space. I'm thinking to upgrade to a EVO 850 500GB or 1TB. Anyone with any experience and suggestions?

I also noticed there is a price difference.. Amazon seem to be selling them cheaper than I could buy it in Singapore (even with added shipping)... arrgghh. !!!

---

After getting the SSD, the next issue is how can I clone my C:\ (a smaller SSD) which has Windows 8.1 installed onto this newer and bigger SSD?

I think the simplest solution is likely the Paragon Migrate OS to SSD software. Or their flagship Hard Disk Manager 15 product suite.

While researching for this software, I also came across a hardisk rescue software called SpinRite 6.0 which I think is well worth looking into it, especially if your HDD is failing with some bad sectors...

Sonicable

Fast charging cable finally here for iPhones.
This used to be the realm of Android devices, where a cable  can charge faster simply by telling the device it is connected to a wall outlet and it can draw as much current as it needs.
Some USB(Android) cables or wall charger do not convey that message to the device(phone), hence the device only draws 500mA to charge the battery. This is often very slow these days.

Sonicable I guess worked similarly - in the FAQ, it is mentioned that it WILL NOT speed up charging when using a wall charger but WILL speed things up with using a USB port to charge from a PC or presumably from the USB port from a TV.

In anycase I think most people would just charge from the wall charger - much faster than any USB port can charge.  Hopefully in the future USB 3.1 or newer standards can supply more current (2.1A) for such uses.

Apple Watch

Apple's profit earnings surge up 33%. Amazing - Penetration to China for Apple has been very good !

The new Apple Watch is also finally moving forward - with the sport edition that uses sapphire glass.

And apparently, demand is more than what Apple can supply.

I think the Apple watch will catch on if and when the home is fully automated with Apple products, and you can control the devices with the watch.  Automation in the hotel industry, - like using the Apple watch to open the hotel doors, or control the lights and TV in the hotel room would also spur demand !

So what do you think about the Apple watch?
