Vlogger's toolbox

As the blog world seems to move towards a video world.... Youtube will utilize AI to identify content in Videos to extract contextual meta-data.... The world of blogging will evolve more and more to video blogging...   Many people are already doing it in a big way on Youtube and other video publishing side.

Personal Direct broadcasting are already hits with younger generation.

So what are the tools need to start becoming a Vlogger (if you are not already one). We all must become efficient to product good quality content quickly.

Hardware :
1) Computer
2) Good Microphone, preferably with a pop-filter
3) good quality webcam, or DSLR

Software:
1) Audio editing software -Audacity, Reaper (http://www.reaper.fm/)

2) Video editing software - SnagIt, Camtasia, and ProShow Producer or Premiere/AfterEffects
3) Photo editing software - Photoshop, Canva

Today I'm going to talk about Proshow Producer and Camtasia Studio

Both are great software.  Camtasia can do screen capture and Smart Focus, which gives it an edge over ProShow which is more a Slideshow video editor, great for titling and captions and many transitions.

Camtasia good for making tutorial type videos, whist ProShow is better to make fancy video slideshows.

Tell me what is your favourite.....

Making money online

This is a very elusive subject.  Many systems out there claiming it can bring you passive income and even financial freedom.  For me, so far, the only real money I saw was from Adsense by Google on Blogs and Youtube and also sales from Artwork posted to Society6.com

The elusive ebook (Amazon) and Clickbank affiliates sales has never made me a cent so far. I want to reach out to people who have attempted any form of online income generation so that we can share experiences.

A burning disaster for "Sunksom" Note 7

Fire fire fire. That's what happening to the disastrous Note 7, spelling Billions of losses for Samsung.
Even the replacement Note 7 caught fire, and Samsung had to halt sales and tell customers to power down all Note 7s, and get a replacement phone(other models) or a refund.

How will Samsung recover from this big problem ? If the replacement also caught fire, it may suggest that the cause may be something else that affected the battery to blow up.

This in turn spell happiness for their competitor Apple 8), chuckling away with iPhone 7 with huge margins.

Samsung will need to come back with a Note 8 that is ulta powerful (yet non-exploding) and super-cheap, to gain back market share.  But if Note 8 explodes again, that will be the-end, the-end (sung to the tune of pink panther)

All things Mi - Siao Me

Today I'll talk about Xiao Mi Phone, particularly the Mi3W model. The problem I had was probably caused by me - as I was/am not sure about android, let alone it's booting technology. A friend had an old Mi3W phone sitting in a box - unused for years, built in 2013. He said it was un-usable so he gave it to me. It didnt boot up, but eventually I managed to get it to factory reset and upgrade to Android 6.01 by using the OTA method. Then I discovered that there were no Google Playstore, and thats useless for me. I decided to flash a custom rom, hoping that playstore shall be available. After flashing Mokee, it doesnt boot up ever again, always getting to Fastboot screen. But strangely enough, it finally booted into Mokee. All was fine, but still no Playstore. So I attempted to factory reset again from within Mokee. This created the infinite Bootloop with the Mi logo showing up and reboots again. But I can still somehow get into Fastboot. I attempted to MiFlash the Fastboot roms, which MiFlash said successful, but i can never boot right. Now the unit doesnt even boot up. pressing any combination of buttons does nothing. Plugging into Windows, seems like it keeps connecting and disconnecting from the USB. Plugging into power, there is a red blinking light.. I think this is like superfast reboot or bootloop. I'm about to throw the damn phone into the trash soon - and no more Mi devices in the future. its also know as the Red light of death. Siao Me

Star Trek Discovery - Boldly delay till May 2017

Star Trek fans have to wait another extra few months for the new Star Trek Discovery. CBS is on track to debut a new spinoff series from The Good Wife in January 2017.  This could be interesting, afterall, The Good Wife had been getting pretty good ratings.  Looks like the Good Wife got one up on space saga.

iPhone 7 Rant

The iPhone 7plus has the added dual-camera feature which adds a "zoom" feature to the camera. Coupled with the longer battery life and water resistance feature makes the iPhone more useful in more environments. Why the phone isnt protected by water damage, I have no idea 8)

Look and feel looks dated since Apple is probably keeping a secret new design for next year's all important 10 years anniversary.  Many people rant about the lack of the audio jack, which I think is no big deal. It just mean you can charge the phone while using a lightning headphone - just go wireless I guess.  Whats annoying is there is no NFC or wireless charging capabilities yet. (yes I know - wait for next year)

Meanwhile Google is marching ahead with Android Nougat and Google Home, which I think will give Apple's eco-system a run for it's money

Future of Batteries

With the mass adoption of cell phones and portable devices like tablets and what not. Lithum batteries have been the center of it all.

But as users become application and data hungry, so does their power consumption. Even Tesla's new cars will want to innovate and use more efficient and higher safety batteries.

What are the future tech of batteries ?

INTEL going ARM

INTEL going ARM

Intel has gone into the arms race for mobile CPU chips. They've gotten the rights from ARM to produce processors chips and may become a big supplier to all phone manufacturers who uses ARM's designs.

ARM was sold to Japan tech giant Softbank (also one of the top phone carriers in Japan) !  They even produce robots and build smart cars ;) Amazing how things change so rapidly. They are certainly well positioned for Internet-of-Things to come.

Will somebody come up with a new revolutionary design to rival Arm or x86 ? Guess not.

Star Trek Discovery

Yes... Star Trek Discovery - the series, is coming in 2017, and the story will be told like a novel rather than episodic style in the previous series.  The timeline is still unclear and the USS-1031 number may be a tell tail sign, but no one can be certain.

I am hopeful for a future story line rather than a prequel.  And I am hoping the story line goes on the Prime timeline instead of the reboot timeline of the movies.

Daily Ramblings 3 August 2016

Another bad day at the Singapore Stock Exchange, with Oil (WTI CRUDE) being at $39.68 per barrel.

Oil related stocks took a downward movement when the market opened at 9am and by 9:10am, somewhat rebound back to a better price. Hopefully this would sustain and move up.

On the lighter side, China has demoed their Bus that allows cars to drive underneath it.

Read the news on https://www.engadget.com/2016/08/02/straddling-bus-china/

Today I want to highlight an open-source software for Windows called Launchy. It kinda reminds me of a Mac utility called Quicksilver.  It allows to the find files or applications quickly by using the keyboard.

Daily Ramblings

Today, the stock market isn't doing so well in Singapore, especially the oil related stocks. As of writing of this Blog article at 9:52am 2nd Aug 2016 GMT+8, DBS has fallen 11cts/0.72% to $15.52.  Another sucky trading day.

Meanwhile, Pokemon Go has achieve the 100 million downloads milestone. Wow! lots of monsters out there.

As for other money making opportunities out there, there is GetMyAds, FX United, Journey of Success, G-Token, B-coin just to name a few....

Currently, I'm thinking of the next working title eBook - suggestions welcome.

eCommerce in Singapore

eCommerce in Singapore

Good day everyone. Today I want to talk about the growing eCommerce in Singapore. As retail rental space continues to go up, retail shopping is impacted by high rental, and hence it's goods and services are equally highly priced.

More and more Singaporeans hit the online shopping hunting for good bargains.  eCommerce store-fronts such as Qoo10.sg offers 9% to 12% fees for selling products on it's site.  Lazada even handles delivery for the seller, by coming to the seller to pick up the packed package and delivering it to the buyers.

I am currently contemplating on facemasks from A.C.H. (above image), and also JayJun Cosmetics (JC - shown below)

Will post the pros and cons of using each (Qoo10 vs Lazada) in the future.

Kindle Self-Publishing - need to know

This post is for newbies who want to dabble into Amazon KDP to self-publish their own digital ebook.  Amazon KDP's have certain requirements when you create the ebook, I find that although Microsoft Word does an adequate job, over use of Word's features will create ALOT of problems.

The reason is because of many different kindle devices and kindle viewers working on other devices like android and iOS devices.  You no longer can dictate formatting and page numbers.  User selectable font sizes also causes further headaches.

In short, Use basic Table of Contents features. User Heading1 for all your chapters and Body Text for all you main text.  Avoid formatting words wtih font or font sizes. (bold and italics are fine)

If possible, fine re-usable templates and conversion tools. I found one called Alkinea which works using Openoffice or LibreOffice.  Basically, just the the template, then use the tool to convert to filename.mobi format and upload to Amazon KDP

Hacked Web cameras

It appears with the rising use of IoT (Internet of Things) and webcams, which all run on some form of scaled down Operating System (like Linux).  Security patches are hard to install, and most users do not bother with patches to devices.

As such, malicious attacks on these devices are rampant. Hackers can install malware onto these devices and use them to do various things like denial of service (DoS) attacks or increasing traffic to sites their control for profit.

Most users dont even know they are infected. No one have antivirus for devices or IoT yer. And as iot becomes popular, it will become hard to patch all things connected.

ASUS notebook BIOS update

Today I faced a challenge.  A friend bought an expensive Asus Tachi 21 some months ago.  However, the battery died and can only use on AC power.  However, the machine auto upgraded to Windows 10, and the dual screen NO LONGER works.  After searching around, it appears there is a BIOS fix ( version 211 vs 203 that is on the notebook).

However trying to update it use the BIOS' easy flash or Windows Winflash all failed as it required minimum 20% battery power to flash the BIOS.  So it appears the only solution is to spend money and fix the battery before full functionality can be achieved.  Thats a weird setup.

Anyway with a way to by-pass the battery check to force an BIOS update? thanks

Tumblr

Is Tumblr a good platform to blog and will adsense work well with Tumblr?

Installing Wordpress Multi-site on Windows 10

Installing LAMP and Wordpress on Windows 10

Last night, my website got lost - mainly because of my carelessness, and failure to document.
So I have decided I will rebuild a new website from the ground up, and perhaps do more, like enabling Wordpress multi-site which I did not do the first time around.

I may even publish an tiny ebook describing the method.

The high level steps

1. Install LAMP - use uniform server
2. Prep for wordpress install
3. Install wordpress
4. configure multi-site
5. configure domain name and IP
6. Configure LAMP

This blog will be updated regularly

Service Disrupted

Lioncity.tk had a disaster. The database was accidentally overwritten, hence the whole site has "disappeared" so to speak. The domain is redirected here to Everythingbinary, as I do not have time to redo or restart the Lioncity site.

I will have to rethink the process of installing Wordpress again.

Next generation of Routers

Routers

Think you have the latest and greatest routers AC3200 etc from the likes of ASUS or Netgear?

Think again.

Introducing Portal, the latest and greatest router promises to solve all your Wifi problems. I will be built by Ignition Labs, a company founded by a group of Qualcomm engineers.

The usual suspect specifications are the standard high-powered, dual-band antennas, support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, beamforming, MIMO etc.

One new feature that is unavailable in any router today is that Portal can operate on other 5GHz channels within the Spectrum where other routers cannot. This is extremely useful in urban environments, where more and more 5GHz routers are congesting each other. What this does is better range and throughput can be gained.

Portal's congestion management and expanded spectrum access allow it to perform up to 300 times faster and three times lower latency than other routers.

Ignition Labs has started a Kickstarter program to raise money to deliver this technology into users' hands. You can visit their kickstarter page to see.

In the FAQ section there is this question and answer :

What are the client requirements to use the new spectrum? is 5GHz 802.11ac enough?

Hi John! Yes, that's all the requirements you need. All client devices supporting 802.11ac can use this new spectrum with Portal. And by the way, most of your older 5GHz 802.11n client devices will also work seamlessly with Portal to use this new spectrum. Portal is dual-band dual-concurrent, meaning that it also simultaneously operates on 2.4GHz to support legacy client devices with just 802.11b/g/n.

Wifi Map - the wifi password sharing app

Cellphone  App : Wifi Map
Hello fellow Singaporeans or foreign readers,
Today I'm talking about an iPhone/Android app I stumble upon called Wifi Map.   There is a free version as well as a paid Pro version.
It is essentially a way for people to share their wifi out to the public.  And if there are enough people and businesses that do that, we can connect to wifi services where-ever we go.
I will recommend you only share your wifi out if your router has the guest facility and you are sharing only the "internet" and not the "intranet" or home traffic.
How does it work ? Say you create a guest network at home, and you connect to this guest network using your phone, then you launch Wifi Map. You are given an option to add your Wifi to the public network.  Essentially, you are telling Wifi Map your guest network's password. This is later re-broadcast to users who is in the vicinity and requires Wifi.
I will be testing this in Singapore, and will let you know how well it scores. And see how friendly are Singaporeans sharing their Wifi.

WAMP - a development platform

Uniform Server Zero XI is a free and open source Windows Apache-MySQL-PHP-Perl server suite.

Essentially, you download and unzip into a directory and you can run the WAMP (no installation).  The only caveat is you need Microsoft VC9 32-bit libraries. This is mentioned in the important readme in the directory.

I'm exploring installing Wordpress with this  Uniform, instructions here . The problem I am having is wordpress' plugins and themes do not download nor update. So I will have to trouble shoot that.

Update : The reason the download for plugins doesnt work is because the CURL dll was not enabled. Need to go to php admin and enable this CURL module.

Home Networking - Two Routers - Two WAN - Multiple PCs - and Wireless Devices

Home Networking - Two Routers - Two WAN - Multiple PCs - and Wireless Devices

The title is a mouthful, but today at Everything Binary, we are going to talk about home networking in a very unique and special environment.  When I was thrown with this problem, I googled everywhere for a solution, and even called the telco to see if they knew of a solution, but none to be found anywhere.  No one could offer a solution

What does a regular home network look like ?

Simply google and you can find a typical image like this :

The router is simply set as default router settings, and would DHCP  NAT ip addresses to all your home devices.  I think most people somewhat understand this model, and if not, can easily find resources on the internet that would explain this in detail.

A step beyond the above diagram, is the fact that your house maybe bigger, or have obstacles that block wifi signals to farther distances. So one would need to "extend" the coverage area.  This is usually done with a Wifi repeater, or a wired-bridge or wireless-bridge.  Some people have a spare wireless router, so they configure the router to become an Access Point (this is done by turning off the DHCP feature off the router) - again, details are all over the place on the internet on this subject).
A diagram for such a setup :

The powerline adapters are just showing examples where cabling of ethernet cables to those points are difficult, so you use a powerline solution to bridge the gap (at the expense of some performance).

The NEW problem

As ISPs deploy newer and faster speed solutions of over 500mbps, Fibre Optic lines are deployed. But ISPs still have older Cable technology sitting there, so they bundle both solutions to you, promising that two networks are better than one, because you can have larger internet wifi coverage of your house.

So, is the claim true ? The answer is Yes and also No. If you have two internet WAN ports coming into your house, say one Cable line offering you 300mbps and a Fibre line offering you 1Gbps.  How would your house network look like?

It will look somewhat like two of the first diagram.and since there are two routers place physically at two distant locations, your wifi coverage would be "extended"

But what is the problem? The problem is you have two networks.  Machines or devices on one network cannot talk to other devices on the other network.  Consider if you have a printer one network A, and you are now in network B and you cant access the printer easily.  Similarly, if you have a media center, housing all your videos, photos and music - they will all only appear on one network and not visible to the other network.

The Solution to the problem

Now, this is where is article will become interesting - and different from all other articles on the internet (so I hope).

We need to bridge the two networks so that they believe that they are on ONE network even though there are two WAN ports (or connections to the internet).  I'll use the same diagram but modify it so that it shows two internet networks coming into the house

The diagram does not explain the configuration,

Let me start by talking about how to setup Network A side :

You have a Router (in Blue), which gets an IP from the DSL modem, does DHCP and assigns ip address to the devices.  We make sure that this router will only assign ranges from 192.168.0.10 through to 192.168.0.99.  We then make sure we reserve 192.1.68.0.10 and 192.168.0.11 in the router's setting  for the PCs or desktop that never moves. This will make sure the DHCP will never assign these numbers to any other devices.  On these PCs, you will configure static IPs for them so they will never change.  The reason why you do not do the same for the laptop, is you may move the laptop to another part of your house where Network B resides, and you want that laptop to still work seamlessly.

Now for Network B side :

You will setup the router's IP to start at 192.168.0.100 - this also means to configure the router, you need to use this IP address.  You then make sure this DHCP only dishes out IP ranges 192.68.0.101 through to 192.68.0.199.  If you have PCs or stationary unmovable devices here, you would do the static IP like for network A.

The powerline connecction to the two routers goes to the LAN ports. If they can be linked with ethernet cable, even better.

For your wireless network, setup the same SSID names on both routers, and your mobile devices will connect seamlessly across A or B network.  One caveat is that sometimes you have no control which Internet the mobile device will actually use even if you connect to network B router, you may acquire an IP assigned by Network A's router and hence utilize the internet connection of Network A instead of network B.  This has some performance impact, especially if you are using powerline connection between the two routers.

Essentially, the above method will make two networks (driven by two internet connections), into one network with the 192.168.0.xxx

Wa-la.... a solution to utilize two internet service and merge them to one network so that your devices at home work together as ONE network.

Hope this is everything you need if you have the more than one internet service into your home and need a solution to make one network. Here are Everything Binary, I hope you have FOUND something useful.

PS.  For residents in Singapore, using Starhub's Dual-Broadband service, or even Viewqwest's 2Gbps service, and you want to merge your dual service into one network, you can consider giving this a try.

The Double-NAT problem

I just realized that a MyRepublic Fiber plan account will create a Double-NAT problem.

What this means is the ONT device that connects to the fiber point, will already do NAT (Network Address Translation) once. That port is then connected to a wireless router (in my case an ASUS router).

So as usual, the ASUS router gives out NATed address in the range of 192.168.1.xxx

But when I observed what WAN address the ASUS router is getting, I get 172.22.23.230.

But I know my public IP address should be something like 103.252.xxx.xxx

What that means to me, is I cannot use the DDNS feature on the router. And there is no way I can get around it, unless i subscribe for a static IP address (which cost some money).

Anyone figured out how to prevent the 2nd NAT? Perhaps setting up the Asus router as a bridge or access point only? not as a router?

--- Update 7 Mar 2016 ---

There is no solution to the Double NAT problem, especially since I have no access to the Fiber box, cannot configure port forwarding nor DMZ.  So it would appear the best solution is pay My Republic $50 to get a static IPv4 address.

Home Automation

Home Automation Resource

I figured that this site, "Everything Binary" may be a little too broad. As such I am testing to spring board the "Home Automation Resource Site" (which is hosted at x10hosting). This will free up EverythingBinary from covering Smart Homes type articles and maybe focus more on software arena.

Another change is that I'm trying out Wordpress on x10 Hosting, coz for whatever reason, Google had removed the Blogger App from the iTunes store.  So now it becomes hard to publish stuff on the move on Blogger for me.

Latest update : Today (7 Mar 2016), I found my Home Automation Wordpress site suddenly disappeared.. So much for free hosting at x10hosting.com All my posts are gone, and the visitors were just picking up. Bummer
