Connect your USB device wirelessly to your PC/Mac

 

I came across this software that will facilitate adding any Wired USB device into a wireless one.

The software is called VirtualHere : https://virtualhere.com/home

VirtualHere allows USB devices to be used remotely over a network just as if they were locally connected!

There is a server and client software. And the server software is not free though... they are charging a US$49 license fee.

but the server can accept multi-USB devices... say if you have a RASP Pi with a USB hub HAT, you can just have one license to cover multiple devices. neat.

Huawei Harmony OS

 As you know Huawei has  been under attack by US using banning tactics to prevent gett chips made, and support for software components developed by US (ie Google)

Huawei response so far is to abandon Android, and pursue it's own mobile OS called HarmonyOS (ver 2.0 at current time).. which is based on LiteOS that could integrate with IoT.

The problem is whether they can encourage enough developers to port the Apps over to their new platform.

I believe Huawei need a killer App that is missing from iOS of Android platform... that may force people onto the HMS platform.  An incremental HMS that is super powerful? if there are API that photography apps can hook into to do new capabilities that werent easily done before? 

As an existing camera app on iOS or Android can not only easily port to HMS/HarmonyOS, but also can add new features without much effort.  The App would then look superior on the HMS platform.

Also, currently Huawei is still focused on ARM and possibly JAVA... Any possibility they will go RISC V?

What kind of killer app can Huawei launch ?  Perhaps getting EPIC onboard may also be one interesting area they can look at.

10Gpbs networking for home is coming

As cheaper hardware becomes available, you can begin to change your equipment to add 10Gbps networking for home.

One place I see using most is a NAS (Network attached storage), where you can host all your photos or videos.  Getting large files to your PC from a NAS can become slow on 1 Gbps network.  So the first step to implement a 10Gbps network, is probably just to do networking from your workstation or main PC to a high-speed NAS using 10Gpbs.

Some of the  considerations includes using CAT 7a or CAT8 cabling... and getting a 10Gbps switch/router and PCIe card for your PC (unless it is a new motherboard with built-in 10 Gbps port)

Xprinter thermal receipt printer N160II 80mm

I am looking at this China made receipt printer, that is suitable for POS(Point of Sale) system use.

I also cannot find any Youtube video that talks about this printer (at least not in English)...

So I decided to write this post... and I'll expand more details as I discover them.

I found out that Windows 7, and the Gicater POS software doesn't play well with this printer, at least if the Receipt being printed is very long, and each line item is overly descriptive.  The two modes available (driver and compatibility mode) all have it's own challenges :
1. driver mode - prints everything till the end of the receipt, but each line item over runs and overprints on the price column

2. compatibility mode - the linefeed are controlled much better than (1), but if the receipt is too long, it doesnt print it all, and just cut the receipt. So a partial receipt is printed only.

I am suspecting maybe I need to install the driver.  So thats the next step.

Watching 4K content on PC

Seems like technology keeps adding DRM to makes things difficult for consumer.

It would seem like you need a 4K monitor/TV capable of HDR and also capable of HDCP 2.2

Then you need Windows 10 that supports some new DRM thing .. perhaps April 2018 update and later.

Then you need a Graphics card that is capable of 10bits color , that means a GTX1050 or above.. for Nvidia.  For AMD, I cant find any info other than their latest drivers supposed to add support..

Then you need Microsoft Edge browser in order to get to Netflix site to play the movie. It would appears using Chrome browser would not work.

Of course you need to be a subscriber of Netflix's premium plan to get 4K content.

Anyone out there have experience with this?

Mobile Phones

With the mobile phone being most people's communication device that is carried around ALL the time.... its no wonder people are willing to pay alot of it.  So much so that Apple can price their latest iphone Xs higher than S$2000 and people would still buy 'em

For me, I'm going for mass market Chinese phones.. and I think their quality and functionality has improved greatly over the years.  The recent phone called Pocophone F1 (by XiaoMi) is one example of high spec, affordable price phone.

Companies that is consider "premium" includes brands like OnePlus, XiaoMi, Oppo, Huawei

Lesser known phones like Cubot, LeTV / Le Eco, and Elephone and many more brands are also fighting for market share in the lower end spectrum.


I may finally bite the bullet and try one of these unknown cheapo brands and see what kind of experience it brings.  Android has come a long way and certainly can rival Apple's bestest features... don't you think?  For the die hard fans, sure, buy Apple, pay premium for everything from accessories to repairs.. it's your money to burn... and hopefully Apple would use that profit for newer inventions
